Reflective Practice

Reflective Practice for Organisations & Charities

Working in roles that hold care, crisis, or complexity for others takes something out of people, even the most experienced, resilient teams. Reflective practice offers a regular, protected space for staff and volunteers to pause, process, and make sense of the work they do, together.

I facilitate reflective practice groups for organisations and charities whose people carry emotional weight as part of the job, whether that's frontline care, safeguarding, crisis response, education, or any role where the human cost of the work can quietly build up if it's never given room to be spoken.

What is reflective practice?

Reflective practice is a facilitated group space where staff or volunteers can step back from the day-to-day and explore what's coming up for them in their work, the cases or material that stay with them, the patterns they notice, the moments of doubt or difficulty that are hard to raise elsewhere.

It isn't therapy, and it isn't supervision in the managerial sense. It's a space led by curiosity rather than judgement, where the group itself, and what each person brings to it,  shapes the conversation. My role is to hold that space safely, not to direct it. There are however, various reflective practice frameworks that can be used to facilitate the space.

How I work

My approach is person centred and collaborative. Sessions are trauma informed, relational and led by what the group brings each time, held within a consistent, confidential structure. Where it's helpful, I may draw on grounding, breathing, or mindfulness techniques to support people in staying present with difficult material, these are always invitational, so participants are in choice.

Everyone is met without judgement, and everyone has choice in how much they share.

Why it matters

Teams working in emotionally demanding roles are at real risk of burnout, vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and disconnection,  from the work, from each other, and from why they started in the first place. Reflective practice offers a preventative, sustaining space that can help:

• Reduce isolation and build genuine peer connection

• Supports emotional processing before it becomes burnout

• Strengthens self-awareness and confidence in difficult decision-making

• Model a culture where wellbeing is taken seriously, not just spoken about

The practical details

Group size: ideally no more than 8–10 participants with consistent membership session to session where possible (not always possible around shift work etc.)

Session length: 1.5 hours

Format: In person or online, at a frequency that suits your organisation — monthly is common

Fees: are be part of the consultation and planning phase, and may depend on length, frequency and location of the work. As a guide, the industry average sits between £250-£450 per session currently. (There are of course people working either side of that average)

Is this right for your organisation?

If you're not sure whether reflective practice is what your team needs, or how it might fit alongside existing supervision or support structures, I offer a free introductory call to talk it through. There's no obligation, just a conversation about what your people need and whether I'm the right fit to support them.
